What You Need to Know About MERV

Today I want to talk to you about MERV?  And no, I’m not talking about your great uncle Merv.

What is Merv?

MERV is an acronym for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value or the standard method for comparing the efficiency of an air filter. It was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineering.

Why Should You Care About MERV Ratings?

Here’s why: You want to make sure the air in your home is as clean as it can possible be, right?  If you or anyone in your family has allergies or breathing concerns, the AC filters you use can significantly alter the effectiveness of your air quality.

Which MERV Rating is Best?

All AC filters have a MERV rating which will tell you how effectively it removes air contaminants. For example, a MERV 1-4 can remove most pollen and dust, but may still allow mold, spores, and dust mite debris through. YUCK. Hospitals typically use filters rated between 13-16. At Comfort Air Engineering, we recommend AC filters with a MERV rating of 8 or higher. This ensures top air quality and can relieve allergy and breathing issues.

Don’t forget to check and change your filters regularly, and get in touch with us here at Comfort Air if you have any questions or concerns about the air quality in your home.
